Built on orders of Prussian King Frederick William II in 1791, the Gate was modelled on the entrance to the Greek Acropolis. Above the six pillars is a Roman quadriga -a chariot of four horses driven by Victoria, the goddess of victory.

After WW II the Gate became the border between East and West Berlin. The coin is also a celebration of unification at the end of the Cold War. The inscription reads Unity and Law and Liberty.
