Original 1706 French silver jeton issued for Louis-Joseph de Bourbon, Duke of Vendôme, in his role as General of the Royal Galleys during the reign of Louis XIV. The reverse features three sirens bathing near a rocky outcrop in the sea with the legend EXITIUM SI QUISQUAM ADEAT and the exergue GALERES 1706. The maritime allegorical design is one of the most visually distinctive of the early 18th-century galley issues. The obverse displays the crowned Bourbon arms surrounded by the collar of the Order of the Holy Spirit, with crossed anchors below, referencing the office of General of the Galleys. A solid early 1700s French silver jeton with pleasing old tone and strong central detail.
