This highly-stylized 2018 Silver 1 oz Samoa Seahorse coin, minted in stunning 999 BU Proof-like finish will amaze you! Based Scottsdale Mint, in cooperation with the government of the South Pacific island nation of Samoa, this coin is a real show piece. There are three fascinatng subjects that come together in the release of this beautiful Samoan seahorse coin.

First is the coin itself. This is one of the most artistically stylized nature designs we've seen in quite awhile. In fact, Scottsdale described it as a unique abstract stain-glass design.

That is certainly the case, but it leaves out one of the most stunning aspects of the coin's design. The wide band encircling the rim is a wonderful patchwork of various sized geometric shapes. Each shape contains finely-engraved lines, and the various angles of these lines reflect the light differently. As you hold the coin and rotate it, the result is reminiscent of sunlight glistening off the seawater swells off the coast of Samoa. The seahorse in the center inset is shown naturally camouflaged, floating amongst sea grass slowly waving in the flow of the current.

Bubbles are shown rising from the ocean floor. The seahorse itself is displayed as though created of carefully-cut glass pieces. It's geometric form is just as it would be in a fine piece of stain-glass artwork.

SEAHORSE are in a very attractive type-style, and are include in the wide band. The reverse beautifully displays the Samoan crest filling nearly the entire field. The rim is tightly-enircled by a distinctive beaded band. The inscriptions include "SAMOA" at the top rim, and the denomination of 2 Tala (WST) at the bottom. The release year is split on either side of the crest. A Most Curious Sea Creature.

And then, there is the subject of the coin, the seahorse. The seahorse's inclusion on this South Pacific island coin should be no surprise. Samoa has the perfect habitat for these tropical sea creatures to thrive.

This is certainly one of the more curiously-shaped fishes of the ocean. With its head shaped somewhat in the form of a horse head, the common name designation is quite appropriate. When asking children which is their favorite sea creature, the seahorse is always one of the top five.

Highly recognizable, and included in countless children's books and cartoon series, kids just seem naturally to love them. Although, the actual story of the sea creature is really more fascinating than the cartoon version.

This reached as far back as the eighteenth century. The three major competing international powers involved were Germany, Britain, and the United States. Conflicts escalated to civil war, which extended some eight years. However, the armed conflicts did not cease until 1899 with the three colonial powers agreeing to the official partitioning of the Samoan islands (archipelago) with the Tripartite Convention of 1899. The United Kingdom agreed to release their claims, while Germany and the U.

Divided the island chain into German Samoa (western islands), and American Samoa (eastern). Each continued to develop their interests, until the outbreak of World War I, when Great Britain requested New Zealand to seize German Samoa, thus deposing German control of the western islands.

They were further directed to occupy the islands and set up an administrative government, under trusteeship in 1914. After continuing pressure from internal Samoan resistance to the trusteeship, independence was finally granted in 1962. And finally, 35 years later in 1997, Western Samoa officially change its name to Samoa. Now an Independent State ruled under a unitary parliamentary democracy, and a member nation of the Commonwealth of Nations, as well as of the United Nations. As for the islands making up American Samoa they continue today as an unincorporated territory of the Unites States, although unofficially self-governing under their own 1967 Constitution.
