Ships that changed the World - Cutty Sark. The most significant clippers were the China clippers, also called tea clippers or opium clippers, designed to ply the trade routes between Europe, America and the East Indies. Clipper ships were mostly made in British and American shipyards, though France, the Netherlands and other nations also produced some. Clippers sailed all over the world, primarily on the trade routes between the United Kingdom and its colonies in the east, in trans-Atlantic trade, and the New York-to-San Francisco route round Cape Horn during the California Gold Rush. It continued under the stimulating influence of the discovery of gold in California in1848 and Australia in 1851, and ended with the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. The clipper Cutty Sark was built in 1869 at Dumbarton, Scotland, one of the last tea clippers to be built and one of the fastest, coming at the end of a long period of design development which halted as sailing ships gave way to steam propulsion. The famous Scottish poet Robbie Burns created a character called Nannie Dee in his work Tam o Shanter (1791). In the poem, Nannie Dee wore a paisley linen sark that she had worn as a child and had outgrown, which explains why it was too short, or "cutty". The erotic vision of a woman dancing in such a short undergarment caused the central character, Tam, to cry out, Weel done, cutty-sark! A dramatic depiction of Cutty Sark clipping along under full sail! This scene is set against a backdrop of a colored globe. The legend CUTTY SARK defines the theme, while the legend 1 OZ 999 SILVER guarantees the weight and purity. The Perth Mint's "P" mint mark can be found at the 11:00 position near the edge.
